Articuno is a big bird Pokémon with mostly sky blue plumage and ice-like wings. A crest of three darker blue rhombus-shaped feathers adorns its crest. It features red eyes that are round, a small gray beak, and long, slender gray legs. Each foot has three forward-facing toes and one backward-facing toe. A profusion of light blue, downy feathers cover its breast. Its long, streamer-like tail is the same color as its crest and is longer than its body.

Articuno possesses the ability to manipulate ice at will. When Articuno flaps its wings, the moisture in the air surrounding it is chilled, causing snow to fall. It soars from one ice peak to the next. It appears before condemned travelers trapped in frigid locations, according to mythology. As shown in the anime, Articuno sometimes assists and leads travelers to safety. Articuno prefers cold, remote environments such as icy mountains covered with permafrost.

Galarian Articuno firing beams from its eyes

Articuno has a unique look in Galar. Its primary body is lavender in hue, with a black marking on its breast. It has black feet with purple talons. The three longer, joined, and folded to the rear feathers of its crest are the same purple hue as its beak and tail. Its eyes are bright blue in color and seem to be largely closed, encircled by a black, mask-like face disc. When Articuno uses its mental strength, the whole mask, as well as the white, feather-like blades of concentrated psychic force at the margins of its wings, illuminate the same hue as its eyes.

Galarian Articuno maintains its flying position via mental strength, usually never needing to utilize its wings for this reason. Instead, the blades on its wings can cut through iron just as readily as paper. Its eyes can shoot mental energy beams that freeze opponents in place – this is what gives this Pokémon the moniker of its Kantonian cousin. It may even construct illusions of itself in order to trick its opponent and flee. Its smooth and beautiful motions conceal a cold and heartless nature. It may be spotted once every several decades in the Crown Tundra, congregating near Dyna Tree Hill.

The only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Freezing Glare is Galarian Articuno.
