About

“In the brilliant sunshine, Bulbasaur may be seen sleeping. It has a seed on its back. The seed expands in size as it soaks up the sun’s rays.”

Bulbasaur is a tiny quadrupedal amphibian with blue-green skin and darker spots. It features red eyes with white pupils, pointed ears on top of its head, and a short, blunt nose with a large mouth. When its mouth is open, a pair of tiny, pointed teeth may be seen in the upper jaw. Each of its broad legs has three sharp claws at the end. A green plant bulb grows on Bulbasaur’s back from a seed deposited there at birth. The bulb also hides two slender, tentacle-like tendrils that produce energy via photosynthesis and the nutrient-rich seeds housed therein.

As stated in the anime, Breeders grow starter Pokémon for distribution to new Trainers. Bulbasaur, who has been tamed from birth, is considered a rare and well-behaved Pokémon. It has a reputation for being incredibly faithful, even after lengthy periods of desertion. Bulbasaur in the anime has shown a maternal tendency for younger, weaker Pokémon, with one person even picking up a weeping Pokémon with its vines and gently rocking it back and forth through the air while singing a “Bulba-by.

It may be found across the Kanto area in meadows and woodlands. However, owing to Bulbasaur’s reputation as a beginning Pokémon, it is difficult to find in the wild and is usually discovered in the possession of a Trainer. It has been noted that when a Bulbasaur’s bulb is ready to develop, it will flash blue. It strives to resist metamorphosis if it does not wish to develop. Every year, several Bulbasaur congregate in a secluded garden in Kanto to morph into Ivysaur in a ceremony lead by a Venusaur.

Trivia

  • Halloween Bulbasaur in a costume is based on Shedinja.
  • Bulbasaur is one of the four starter Pokémon, along with Charmander, Squirtle, and Pikachu.
