Caterpie is a Pokémon that looks like a green caterpillar with a yellow underbelly and a teardrop-shaped tail. Yellow ring-shaped patterns on the sides of its segmented body mimic its eyes and are intended to frighten off predators. Its most distinguishing feature is the bright red antenna (osmeterium) on its head, which emits a stink to discourage predators. Despite these characteristics and its green plant concealment, Caterpie is often preyed upon by Flying-type Pokémon. Its four small feet are topped with suction cups, allowing it to climb most surfaces with little effort.

Caterpie is simple to catch and develops rapidly, making it perfect for inexperienced Trainers.

Caterpie will shed its skin numerous times as it grows and develops before cocooning itself in thick silk. It can also spew this silk to ensnare enemies, as shown in the anime. It has a ferocious appetite, which pushes it to consume 100 leaves every day. It will even consume leaves larger than itself. The Vermilion flower is its favorite meal, according to Pokémon Adventures. Caterpie may be found in temperate woods and jungles.
