A tutorial on dealing with Team GO Rocket Grunts in Pokémon GO. Pokémon lineups for all Grunt battles are included. Updated for the month of May 2021. Without appropriate countermeasures, Squad GO Rocket Grunts may be very tough, particularly if you’re utilizing a mono typed team and get countered.

We suggest thoroughly reading through each encounter and comprehending how the game assembles Team Rocket Pokémon squads. Pay heed to the most difficult encounter, which has many permutations with the possibility for three Snorlax that may easily catch you off surprise.

Best counters: Mud-Slap Rhyperior / Mamoswine / Golem / Groudon

Grunts that taunt Coiled favor Poison types, particularly those from the Nidoran and Grimer families. You will often encounter Nidoran, Grimer, Muk, and Nidorina. This is a more frequent kind of encounter, accounting for approximately 7% of all TR invasions. For this Grunt encounter, we suggest ground types for Nidoran/Grimer or Muk/Nidorina/Weezing. Skorupi is not vulnerable to ground, however it may be quickly destroyed by a fire or rock type.

If you don’t have any of the ground kinds mentioned above, just go in with your best ground type Pokémon or Pokémon with ground type attacks and you should be OK.

Best counters: Machamp, Breloom, and Lucario

Grunts will mainly utilize Normal type Pokémon like as Teddiursa, Raticate, Porygon2, Porygon-Z, and Snorlax in this taunt line. These encounters account for approximately 7% of all TR incursions.

Machamp (or your best counter user) is recommended for this encounter, although Lucario and Breloom are also viable choices. Fighting moves do a lot of damage to all of these Pokémon, so you’ll only need your strongest fighting types here.

Best counter: Mamoswine, Glaceon, Weavile, Magnezone and Raikou for Gyarados

Grunts that use this taunt will have Dragon Pokémon. In this battle, they will most likely employ a Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite. Because this is a one-on-one battle, we suggest utilizing two Ice Pokemon: Mamoswine, Glaceon, Weavile, or even an Ice Beam Mewtwo. It doesn’t matter what move set you use; just make sure it’s a double Ice move set. These encounters are very uncommon, accounting for just 0.5 percent of all TR incursions reported.

Because you can’t utilize your Ice kinds to fight Gyarados, we suggest bringing one Electric type, like as Magnezone, to deal with it. Raikou is also an excellent choice, although Magnezone is resistant to dragon-type attacks.

Counters of the Grass or Electric types, such as Alolan Exeggutor, Sceptile, Leafeon, Tangrowth, Raikou, Magnizon, Electivire, Jolteon, or Zapdos, are recommended. Counter moves from Go Rocket Pokémon with access to ground and ice type attacks are possible. Poliwrath’s Fighting moves are well-matched by Venusaur and Roserade.

Bring out your Electric Pokemon if you come across a Gyarados, since it has the ability to use ice type techniques that can quickly dispatch your grass types.

Regardless, a squad of Smack Down Tyranitar, one Ice type for Dragonite, and one Electric type for Gyarados is recommended. You may even use a complete SD Tyranitar squad. Whatever Pokémon you confront in the end, water types like Kyogre and rock types like Smack Down Tyranitar are your best bet since they resist fire type attacks. Your finest Ground kinds will also be useful. This taunt is used by about 8% of Invasions.

Charizard / Moltres using Fire type moves can withstand most Pokémon attacks and deliver 2x Super Effective Damage to Scizor. Grunts that employ this taunt primarily utilize Bug-type Pokémon from the Venonat, Scyther, and Weedle evolution lines. Fire types readily beat Bug types, which is crucial in fighting Scizor.

  • Gyarados – double resist Ground and resists Fighting moves, has Water attacks
  • Mamoswine  – 2x effectiveness against Vibrava/Flygon and Gligar/Gliscor.

Grunts that use this taunt will employ Psychic type Pokémon from the Drowzee, Abra, and Ralts evolution lines, all of which are easily defeated by a Dark type Pokemon. You may utilize the same squad as you would for a Mewtwo or Deoxys raid. Ralts and Kirlia are Fairy types with the ability to harm your dark types, but they are so soft that it shouldn’t matter too much. Tyranitar is more than enough for these confrontations, and you most certainly have some charged up.

A sturdy rock type, like as Rhyperior, will aid in dealing with Murkrow and Sableye, while a powerful fighting type, such as Machamp or Lucario, would aid in dealing with the Poochyena family. To deal with the last Pokémon, have a strong fire, insect, fairy, or fighting type to deal with the grass types at the rear. Depending on the line up, this meeting may be especially tough. Snorlax is always a challenge, and there’s a possibility you’ll run across three of them. Because there is a high possibility you may meet a Snorlax, you should have a fighter on your squad, such as Machamp or Lucario. We also suggest putting Raikou or another strong Electric type in the lead to deal with Gyarados, with a shadow ball ready in case Gardevoir is in the second spot. Then, for the third Pokemon encounter, you might bring an Ice type or perhaps Tyranitar.

  • Lead with a Fighting type (Lucario is excellent and has a shadow ball for Gardevoir) then follow with Ice and Electric types.
  • Metagross with Meteor Mash and Dialga are also viable backups.
  • Ursaring with Fighting moves (particularly against Lick) is unexpectedly powerful in this matchup versus Dragonite with any Dragon-type move set because to its bulk and high neutral damage output (beware of Gardevoir)
  • Lucario with double Fighting is also an excellent choice since his second type is Steel, which will assist him a lot in this battle.Silph Road and PokéBattler deserve credit for the counters (via reddit).

Rhyperior is the protagonist. Because of the delay in striking by grunt Pokémon after utilizing charge techniques, Lucario Power-up Punch is very strong. Charizard is excellent for the same reason, thanks to Dragon Claw and the fire-type attacks over good coverage. You have a lot of control over how quickly the Go Rocket grunt can go. This group is very well-rounded for all grunt encounters. Gyarados is the only one who will challenge you, but a well-planned Rock Wrecker or a powered-up Shadow Ball will suffice.

Grunt mechanics

Grunts will construct a squad by randomly selecting one Pokémon from each of the three columns (#1 – 3). The Grunt will harass you before you begin the Team Rocket Battle encounter in Pokémon GO. We utilize this taunt line to determine which Pokémon he or she will employ in the battle.

Team Rocket Grunts do not utilize shields, giving you an advantage in these fights. You should shield against any Charge move they employ (the Shadow Pokémon’s charged assault in combat is not Frustration, but a normal move from their move pool).

Every Pokémon on your squad that faints lowers the amount of Premier Balls you get for the Shadow Pokémon capture encounter. Switching low HP Pokémon before they faint is in your best interests. There is a small delay in Rocket Grunts striking after charge moves are performed or Pokémon are swapped, which you may exploit to your advantage.

After a fight, your Pokémon are not immediately healed. If you lose, you may rematch, and the Grunt will use the same Pokémon. There are no consequences for rejoining.

Once the confrontation begins, you may leave the Poke Stop. There is no limit to how far you may go (or at least we never reached it). We tested it up to almost 500 meters (0.31 miles).

These taunts represent the most powerful Pokémon you’ll encounter, not the one you’ll be able to capture. Team Rocket’s grunt hints to the kind of their third Pokémon. You will always capture the first or second Pokémon that they utilized.
