Cubone is a tiny, bipedal reptile Pokémon with a light brown coat that covers most of its body save for its cream-colored belly. Its thumbs are two little claws on each hand, while its toes are one huge nail on each foot. It has a short tail and two little spikes on its back. Cubone wears the skull of its deceased mother as a helmet on its head. As a result, save for its triangle, black eyes and a tiny region around them, most of its true face has never been seen. The top of the skull features two rounded horns while the bottom sides have a tooth-like tip. Cubone has a brown snout underneath his cranium. The little Cubone lives only due to its incredible talent in using the bone it carries as a weapon.
It is known as the Lonely Pokémon because of its inclination to isolate itself and shun social settings as a result of the pain caused by its mother’s death. Cubone would often grieve at night in memory of its mother. When Cubone screams, the skull on its head vibrates, emitting “a plaintive and melancholy sound.” The howls are supposed to be most terrifying on full moon nights. Cubone seems to recognize its mother under the full moon, so it screams with anguish. Mandibuzz, a natural predator, is drawn to its screams. A Cubone is reported to develop into a Marowak after coming to grips with the loss of its mother. Cubone’s dreams make it weep, yet sobbing makes it stronger. Cubone prefers rocky environments, such as mountains or caves. It also used to live in Lavender Town’s Pokémon Tower, where departed Pokémon were buried and mourned.
Cubone and its evolved form, Marowak, are the only Pokémon known to know the moves Bone Club and Bonemerang. Cubone and Marowak are also the only Pokémon known to be able to use the Thick Club item. Bone Rush was another of Generations II and III’s defining techniques.
