Staryu is an echinoderm Pokémon with five tentacles that is golden-brown in color. These appendages encircle an external organ known as the core. A golden ring coiled around Staryu’s bottom left point secures the core, which resembles a golden metal case with a red jewel in the middle. If any of Staryu’s appendages are destroyed or devoured by predators such as Lumineon, it is uninjured and can easily regrow them as long as the core is intact.
When the sun sets, the core sparkles brightest. Many Staryu will float to the surface and align themselves with stars in the night sky as their core flickers, indicating a link with celestial bodies. According to the anime, if Staryu grows weak, its core would become dim and flash slowly. Towards the end of summer, groups of Staryu tend to congregate and light up in a continuous rhythm. Staryu may be discovered on the seafloors at the very bottom of the ocean. However, as shown in Pokémon Snap, Staryu may be found in rivers that flow towards the ocean. Camouflage was Generation III’s hallmark move.
Staryu is classed as hermaphroditic in the Pocket Monsters Encyclopedia and the original Japanese version of the anime episode The Water Flowers of Cerulean City.
