Xatu is a green, condor-like Pokémon with long, red-and-black tipped white wings that cover the majority of its face. Designs resembling red eyeballs may be seen under its wings. Xatu’s design has highlights of black, yellow, and red in addition to its predominant green hue. A male Xatu has an additional pair of yellow stripes. It has almond-shaped eyes, a large, hooked beak, and two long red feather crests. Xatu’s foot only have two toes, one in front and one behind. Xatu’s design is reminiscent of a totem pole or a kachina doll.
Xatu spends much of his time standing stationary. According to one belief, Xatu can see into the future with its right eye and the past with its left, and it does not move because it is afraid that its visions of the future would come true. The anime has shown that it can communicate by moving its wings in a semaphore pattern. Xatu is said to reside in South American jungles.
