Yamask is a shadow-like Pokémon that wears a golden mask with a human face on it. It possesses two tendril-like dark arms and big, crimson eyes. It also features a short tail-like appendage that serves as a holding mechanism for the mask. Yamask may speak while possessed by a person, but not in its normal form.

Yamask maintains memories from before it became a Pokémon since it was once a human. It gets enraged when the mask is misplaced or removed. Anyone who wears the mask Yamask carries will be possessed by the Yamask in question. It sometimes glances at this mask and tears, as if in desire. Yamask is believed to roam ancient civilizations’ ruins.

In contrast to its Unova counterpart, Galarian Yamask possesses purple eyes and an old clay tablet directly fastened to its tail. Galarian Yamask is claimed to have been born when a malevolent ghost was lured to the tablet. The cursed markings on the tablet resemble a serpent’s tail, and it is thought to absorb Yamask’s terrible power. This process, brought forth by an ancient curse, causes Galarian Yamask to evolve into Runerigus.
